Annika Mikkonen, Break Sokos Hotel Koli

Moments filled with laughter with co-workers after evening shifts crowned our eventful days of work
A summer job can also be an adventure far removed from your normal everyday environment. That is what it was like for Annika Mikkonen, who travelled from Vantaa to Koli for the summer. Annika worked in the Grill It! restaurant as a waitress and also served customers in the café and summer kiosk.“I applied to PKO for a summer job because I wanted to work outside the metropolitan area. My grandmother's cottage is located on the opposite shore from Koli, and I’ve spent a lot of time in Koli in the summer climbing, for example”, says Annika of her decision to apply for a job at Koli.Due to the long distance, the job interview was carried out remotely in Teams.“The interview was relaxed, and it was great to have the opportunity to do it remotely. It felt like I synced with the interviewer right away, and I understood how cohesive and supportive the working atmosphere is at Koli from the get-go”, says Annika.Summer jobs enable young people to try out different jobs and learn new things.“At first, it felt like a challenge that there was a lot to learn. But when I became familiar with the routines, the work began to flow. The induction to the job was really good, and there was always someone I could ask for advice”, recalls Annika of learning the job. At best, a summer job can give you wonderful memories.“After evening shifts, the eventful days ended in shared laughter with co-workers, and customers from many cultures gave me the chance to use my extensive language skills. PKO is more than just a great place to work, and I’m grateful for the great work experience. PKO is an employee-oriented employer that genuinely invests in induction and well-being at work”, Annika sums up her experiences.Annika's grandmother, Merja Rosbäck, was glad that Annika spent the summer with her in Koli.“I was really pleased that Annika wanted to spend time with me and got the job on her own. It’s not usual that a 16-year-old is given the responsibility of working as a waitress straight away. And best of all, I got the most wonderful company to share the summer at the cottage with”, comments Merja on her grandchild's summer job achievement.
