Romeo to remain closed this summer

The riverboat Romeo, located in Joensuu passenger harbour, will remain closed throughout this summer season. Pohjois-Karjalan Osuuskauppa (PKO) held negotiations regarding the potential sale or leasing of the Romeo to external operators. Discussions took place with several interested parties, but the negotiations ultimately concluded without a result. – The intention was to open Romeo by May Day, but as a result of the negotiations, we made the decision not to open the restaurant boat. The discussions with the operators continued until early June. Romeo will not open this summer because we have not carried out the preparations required to launch operations. We are now reviewing the situation at our leisure and will make decisions regarding the status of Romeo for next summer at a later date, says Satu Näsärö, Director of Travel and Hospitality Trade.PKO opened the riverboat Romeo, situated by the Suvantosilta bridge in Joensuu passenger harbour, for the summer of 2013. For the summer of 2018, Romeo was leased to Joen Catering Oy, after which PKO has been responsible for its operations. Romeo has a total capacity of 320 customers. The vessel, built in Varkaus, is 31 metres long and 7 metres wide. Enso Gutzeit used the s/s Romeo primarily for transporting timber in the Kuopio region, on Lake Saimaa and in the Gulf of Finland. Its longest freight journeys took it as far as Lübeck. In 1971, the vessel was relocated to Helsinki to serve as a residential boat, at which point its steam engine was removed. Since 1979, Romeo had served as a charter cruise ship and a venue for weddings and various other celebrations.
